This traditional Mi’kmaq portage route between the Atlantic Ocean and Bras d’Or Lakes saw the rise and fall of a French trading post, settlement, and British hill-top fort. Today you can visit the canal and locks, which permanently linked the two waterways in a feat of 19th-century engineering.
Tour the canal’s interpretation panels, inspect the gate-lock system, and enjoy a picnic by the water. In summer you can navigate your own boat through the canal, or enjoy watching paddlers, sailboats and power cruisers make their way through. The famous canal winds along Battery Park, great for picnicking, trail walking, fishing, camping, and swimming.
